Why Treat The Damp In Your House?
Your home is more than likely the biggest monetary investment you will ever make. Untreated damp problems cause cosmetic and structural damage that adversely affect the value of this investment. When you sell your asset your asking price will be vastly reduced if you have damp in the home. It is one of the most detractive features in a home and one that is unfortunately readily spotted. Besides the monetary factor there are major risks to your health because damp stays in the walls. This provides a perfect breeding ground for molds and fungal growth, not to mention the terrible musty smell.
Why Use Perfect Projects as your waterproofing contractor?
There are many waterproofing contractors out there and waterproofing companies are a dime a dozen.
As with any specialist contracting the quality of the workmanship can be poles apart, and it is imperative that you choose a service provider with an impeccable reputation. Perfect Projects is managed by well-known West-Rand Boxer: Johnny Muller. Perfect Projects takes a holistic perspective to all aspects of home craftsmanship – (construction, renovations, installations etc.)
We know that any adjustments to your home must appear seamless and must be pleasing to the eye. To waterproof in and of itself is easy. To make it look like it was never done in the first place is much more difficult. It requires a more comprehensive skill set, and “torch-on waterproofing” is the best technology out there, for that perfect finish.
What Types Of Damp Are There?
There are many different types of damp – but it can be spotted by the following signs.
- The walls feel cold and moist to the touch.
- There can be black speckled marks or grey growths and flaking paint or curling wallpaper.
- Ceilings may appear discolored or stained in certain areas.
- Brown patches in corners,
- and condensation in the morning are also red flag indications of damp.
Types of damp
This type is found most often in low-lying areas. As there are large volumes of water underground the water rises and filters into the walls and foundations of the house.
Falling damp is the opposite scenario where moisture seeps into a home from high lying fixtures e.g. roof, balconies, down-pipes and gutters.
Penetrating / Lateral Damp
Penetrating / Lateral damp is the horizontal invasion of moisture through the walls (usually in garages and basements that are below ground).
This is usually found in modern structures where construction materials used are to retain heat. The warm air trapped inside has water vapor that condenses on colder surfaces e.g. walls and ceilings. It is similar to boiling a kettle where there is no outlet for the vapor to go.
This form of damp is usually due to poor workmanship by plasterers and coating contractors. The plaster is mixed incorrectly and is made worse by poor curing methods. The after effects are very similar to condensation damp.
What Approach Do We Take To Waterproofing?
As a waterproofing solution we belief that there is no product better than torch-on waterproofing, using bitumen.
Bitumen is a black tar-like substance that is a by-product of petroleum. It is an extremely powerful membrane that is bend, and tear proof, and highly resistant to water. It works especially well on flat roofs, but can also be applied to foundations, retaining walls, and gutters. The methodology is called “torch-on waterproofing” because the bitumen is melded to the surface by a blowtorch.
Waterproofing Membranes & Waterproofing Concrete
There are many waterproofing membranes that can be used (plastic, rubber, coated fabric etc.). The main thing is for the waterproofing solution to look aesthetically pleasing, as if it is one with whichever surface it is being applied to. If you have concrete structures, or large parts of your home involve concrete, you may want to consider waterproofing the concrete itself.
